Dropped out of university to cook

After leaving school, Christian Rach studied philosophy and mathematics at the University of Hamburg. He earned his money with a temporary job as a waiter, but soon discovered his passion for cooking. Shortly before his final exams, he left his studies without a degree to take the opportunity to work in a French restaurant. He worked in a French restaurant with Philippe Boissou in Grenoble and then in 1984 as a sous chef at Korso in Vienna, where he gained an insight into creative, classic cuisine.

Back in Germany, he opened the restaurant Angels with the snack Lucifer and brought them both to their current level of fame. So Christian Rach managed to become one of Germany's top chefs without any conventional culinary training.

In 2005 Christian Rach was in the RTL-broadcast Devil's kitchen where he led a kitchen crew of celebrities. In the same year, the television program Rach, the restaurant tester.

The recipe for success

The restaurant tester's recipe for success is that he goes in search of problems. He scrutinizes the kitchen, the service, but also the furnishings and the management of the respective restaurant. He explains bluntly and firmly to the operators what is wrong. This usually means that instead of the dishes in the kitchen, emotions boil over and the real reasons for the misery come to light.

The charming and at the same time unembellished way in which Christian Rach confronts the restaurant owners with their problems usually triggers very strong reactions from them. Which in turn has a high entertainment value for the viewer.

However, when he himself is a guest in a restaurant, he is - as he says himself - more of a "tame restaurant visitor and taker".

We are delighted to welcome Christian Rach to the Inspiration Days!
